- Favourite Punch:
The Rip
The Rip is really a hook thrown to the body. The angle can be played to land the punch coming slightly up and across to really get underneath the floating rib.
Technique
From the guard position (for a left rip):
- Load up the shot by rolling the right shoulder slightly toward your opponent. Your left arm should start coming down to just above waist-height here.
- Starting the movement from the hip, snap the striking shoulder out, moving your fist in an arc across your body.
- As you move, pivot your lead foot (left foot for an orthodox stance), flicking the heel out.
- Keeping my right hand in guard, I pull my right shoulder back away from the opponent as the strike connects for extra leverage. Depending on the angle of the punch, you can push up on the lead foot as well ... this drives the punch even further.
- Pull the hand back into the guard position.
Serving Suggestions
I like to follow the Left Rip with either a Left Hook or Right Uppercut. A Left Hook needs to be loaded up, but you should find the Right flows quite naturally. I like a Left Hook after a Right Rip - the Left is already loaded once the Right connects. - Stephen Colbert on How to be An Expert On Anything:
USE THE WORD ZEITGEIST AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE.zeitgeist, bildungsroman, doppelgänger – better yet, anything Latin. But avoid paradigm. It’s so 1994. If you say the word paradigm, everybody knows you’re a poser. Ideally, you want to find words that sound familiar but people don’t really know their definitions:

War for territory between two cultures necessarily involves genocide. I am including cultural assimilation in the definition of genocide. The two most successful Empires, the Roman and the British, basically had a franchise model. US/Western imperialism (until recently) involved a similar cultural hegemony.

Even with the September 11 attacks included in the count, the number of Americans killed by international terrorism since the late 1960s (which is when the State Department began counting) is about the same as the number of Americans killed over the same period by lightning, accident-causing deer, or severe allergic reaction to peanuts.

Wednesday Zeitgeist
My whole body hurts from training. At trivia last night I was so zonked by the hour of boxing I did prior to going I sat there in a daze, mostly missing the conversation. We won and earned another case of beer though. That makes two. A couple of more cases and we're going to have a party.
