I went and saw International Noise Conspiracy a few weeks ago and was much impressed by their very earnest poltical stance. Not often that you see a band so dedicated to a cause, and they did it in a really non-aggressive sort-of way ... lot's of hardcore punk is political, but it's all a bit angry and 'Down with Everything'. INC were just a bit more 'Everyone Love Eachother', but without being quite so naff, although they did this whole 'salute to the crowd thing' at the end that came rather close.
That go me thinking that I would like to be in a band that represented something*. A band that stood up and said 'We believe in this, and it's great and you should too. Oh, and buy our records'. I am not really very political**, so I decided I would like create a band with a strong philosophical stance, because I am the kind of pseudo-intellectual who learnt enough philosophy to wield it in earnest and to generally be a threat to both himself and others.
Anyway, as I've always had a soft spot for Socrates and Plato ... neo-platonic electro-metal was born. We take a hardline Platonic stance and write songs about the Allegory of the Cave, and such and such.
Note: You may have already guessed from visiting this blog that I have an interesting capacity to be completely stupid in a really deeply thought-out way****.
I like to think of it as a gift. Your mileage may vary.
* As opposed to a band that simply represents angst and torment and breaking up with girls, which, let's face it, is just about every band I've been in.
** I studied political philosophy many years ago and ended up all 'bleh' about the whole process. And, to be brutally frank, all the uni political and/or union kids tended to be dicks. Nothing personal, it was a difficult time for me, I was called Troy for several weeks.***
*** Remind me to relate that story, it's really quite amusing.
**** Yes yes, I know the 'really deeply thought-out' is entirely optimistic.
